Rules for the cards:

• One fact or idea per card. Split any card that tests two things.

• Questions must require recall, not recognition: no yes/no or true/false.

• At least a third of the cards ask "why" or "how", not just "what".

• Add 2-3 cloze deletion cards for key sequences or formulas, using Anki's cloze syntax (c1, c2 inside double curly braces).

• Where two ideas are easily confused, add a card that asks for the difference.

• Keep answers under 20 words, and never use a semicolon inside a card.

• Don't add facts that aren't in my notes. If something in my notes looks wrong, uncertain or incomplete, list it under "Check these" instead of making a card from it.

Check these

• "per pyruvate: 1 ATP?" You marked this uncertain. Confirm the Krebs ATP count in your textbook, and whether your class counts it per pyruvate or per glucose (per glucose doubles every number).

• "3 NADH, 1 FADH2" is also per pyruvate. Your exam may ask per glucose; decide which you'll memorize.

• "Krebs makes 2 CO2 per pyruvate? plus 1 in link reaction" is marked uncertain, and the link reaction appears nowhere else in your notes. Add a line on what it is before making a card.

• "flow back thru ATP synthase": I wrote "back into the matrix" on the cloze card, which your notes imply but don't state. Delete it if your textbook describes it differently.

Why it works

The rules encode what makes flashcards work: one idea per card, recall not recognition, and a third "why/how" cards, so you learn the mechanism, not just the vocabulary. Difference cards target the pairs exams love to confuse.

"Don't add facts that aren't in my notes" plus the "Check these" list is the key safety rule: your uncertain notes (the "?" marks here) get flagged instead of turned into confident cards you'll then memorize. The import-ready format and the no-semicolons rule mean you can paste the output straight into Anki.

When not to use it

Flashcards suit facts, terms and short mechanisms, not problem solving or essay skills; for those, practice questions work better. If your notes are thin, the deck will be thin too, and the model won't fill gaps, by design. Always review the cards before studying them, because a wrong card repeated for weeks is hard to unlearn.
